Internship Success – Tyla McAlear at St John Northern Territory Darwin

Tyla McAlear has decided on a new career move after completing an Aurora Internship. The Bachelor of Paramedicine student recently completed a four-week internship at St John Ambulance in Darwin and found the work to be so positive, she’s going to try and make it permanent. “I have enjoyed the work so much in Darwin. I hadn’t considered it before, but this Internship experience has led me to the decision to apply for a graduate position in the NT when I complete my degree.”

The Australia Catholic University (Victoria) student is now even closer to a successful career as a paramedic. “The experiences and exposure I have had whilst on placement with St Johns Ambulance are experiences that I will carry throughout my career in Ambulance. I have been able to further my development and was able to run more jobs being the main treating paramedic.”

Tyla also developed valuable cultural understanding and skills while in the Top End. “This internship has given me the opportunity to deliver health care services to Indigenous communities in Darwin. The skills I have developed through interacting and treating patients have allowed me to further my confidence in becoming a paramedic.”

It wasn’t all work during the Internship and Tyla took full advantage of the opportunity. “Although the placement remains the highlight of my time spent in Darwin, I also got to travel to places I hadn’t been before, travelling on day trips to outer areas of Darwin, going to beautiful waterfalls and markets. Some places I was lucky enough to visit included Litchfield National Park, traveling to areas including Florence Falls, Sandy Creek Falls and Buley Rockhole. These places were beautiful and showed how much the NT had to offer. I am so grateful for this experience.”

The Aurora Internship Program offers full time internships for 4-6 weeks or part-time equivalents at organisations working to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Aurora supports Indigenous and selected non-Indigenous interns to develop practical skills, gain real-world career experience and build professional networks. Applications for internships are open now!

Aurora prioritises supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and graduates to secure funded internships that are relevant to the candidate’s study or career aspirations. Indigenous interns will be provided with a weekly stipend of $800 (pro rata for part-time internships) and up to $2,800 (incl. GST) to cover the cost of travel and accommodation.
