Aurora Intern Profile: Oliver Tolerton
Oliver Tolerton reached new heights during his Aurora internship at the Kimberley Land Council (KLC), “I’d never been this far North or this far West before this experience.” Oliver was nearing the completion of his Bachelor of Arts Honours in Anthropology at Deakin University when he applied for an Aurora Internship. “My friend from my Honours cohort told me about Aurora and I was really surprised because there aren’t many internship opportunities for anthropology.”
Oliver was exposed to valuable learning moments at his time at KLC including a trip to Kununurra, “It was the second day of my internship, and I got sent out to Kununurra to go to a Prescribed Body Corporate annual general meeting which was pretty incredible.”
Oliver’s advice to anyone considering an Aurora internship? “Just give it a go! It’s a really fantastic experience and everyone I’ve talked to at Aurora has been so amazing.”
The Aurora Internship Program offers full time internships for 4-6 weeks or part-time equivalents at organisations working to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Aurora supports Indigenous and selected non-Indigenous interns to develop practical skills, gain real-world career experience and build professional networks.
Aurora prioritises supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and graduates to secure funded internships that are relevant to the candidate’s study or career aspirations. Indigenous interns will be provided with a weekly stipend of $900 (pro rata for part-time internships) and up to $3,800 (incl. GST) to cover the cost of travel and accommodation.
