Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Music and Cultural History
Applications are sought from research students with a background in musicology or music history or in cultural history with a focus on music/sound. The PhD, DMA or Masters student will work with a small team with expertise in cultural history, musicology, cross-cultural histories, gender history and will have opportunities for supervision by Dr Amanda Harris and other members of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music or wider University of Sydney Academic staff. The student would also have access to technical and studio facilities at the SCM, including to the PARADISEC lab. Topics should be relevant to the project’s focus on musical networks and cultural exchange in Australia and its region at any point in history or the present, and might focus on:
o Musical encounters, networks or exchange in the Oceanic region
o regional musical practices (especially Indigenous, Pasifika, or migrant practices)
o Histories of major and minor cultural institutions, ensembles or musical movements

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
– Be enrolled or willing to enrol full-time in a Master of Philosophy, PhD or Doctor of Musical Arts within Sydney Conservatorium of Music if successful in your application for this scholarship;
– Be enrolled or willing to enrol full-time in a Master of Philosophy, PhD or Doctor of Musical Arts within Sydney Conservatorium of Music if successful in your application for this scholarship;
– Conduct research in histories of musical encounter in Australia or a closely related area;
– Hold an Honours degree (first class or second class upper) or equivalent (e.g. industry experience) in a relevant discipline;
– Demonstrate background knowledge in musicology/music history/ music performance or in cultural history with a focus on music/sound and;
– Be able to collaborate effectively and contribute to a small research team.
