As a psychology student I was pleasantly surprised to have been offered a place with the Aurora Education Foundation (AEF) to undertake a primarily design-based internship. In 2019 I was placed with AEF Development Team and this time I worked with the Scholarships Team. The partnership of AEF with the Charlie Perkins Scholarship Trust and the Roberta Sykes Indigenous Education Foundation provides opportunities to academically gifted Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students. Both organisations support postgraduate study abroad for talented Indigenous students. My role was to review the existing websites, to reimagine the interfaces and design. The project was incredibly enjoyable and I was given a lot of creative freedom that made me feel both valued and respected in the workplace. As a student undertaking my honours in Sport Psychology I hadn’t expected to engage with the workplace in a design role. Through my previous placement with AEF I was able to build the connections with the organisation that allowed for me to be recognised as a fit for the project. I believe that access to real world experiences of different employment environments is such an important facet of choosing a career path.
