Aurora Indigenous International UK Study Tour and Symposium

The Study Tour is now open for applications. We encourage any Indigenous student or professional considering postgraduate study overseas to apply.
 
Aurora’s study Tour is run as two separate multi-week visits.
The UK Study Tour is held in October/November and includes visits to Oxford, Cambridge, and the University College London.
The 2024 UK Study Tour will take place from 21st October – 10th November (subject to change and please allow a day on each side for domestic travel).

Successful applicants for the Study Tour need to have attained a Distinction average, or hold, or are heading for, First Class Honours. Applicants completing or holding a Master’s or PhD degree are also welcome to apply. 

                                                                                                                                                                                                          
Study Tour participants have become part of a strong network of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peers. Many participants have returned from the Study Tour to soon pursue study overseas, either immediately or in the future.

Over thirteen years on, the Aurora Study Tour has: 

  • Provided opportunities for over 205 talented Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to gain insights into the experience of undertaking postgraduate study at premier overseas institutions;
  • Seen 60% of participants go on to apply to study at the universities visited, with 93% being accepted.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to apply, applicants must:

  • Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; and can provide a Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent through a signed statement (including common seal) from a Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Heritage Association, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Corporation or Land Council
  • Have graduated from your first degree, or have completed at least two years of your undergraduate degree;
  • Have a distinction average or on a pathway to an Honours degree;
  • Have a strong interest in postgraduate study overseas; 
  • Be willing to act as an ambassador of the program while overseas and;
  • Be available for the Study Tour Symposium in Sydney, NSW for 2nd July 2024 – 4th July 2024 (please allow a day each side for travel). 

How to Apply

You will need to submit the following documents by the closing date to ensure your application can be considered as complete, any submitted past this date may be disregarded: 

  • Personal Statement/Cover letter, explaining your background, career aspirations and reasons for wanting to go on the Study Tour; 
  • A CV; 
  • An official Academic Transcript of all university results (including mid-year results, if available); 
  • Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent through a signed statement (including common seal) from a Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Heritage Association, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Corporation or Land Council; 
  • A high-resolution headshot;  
  • Copy of your passport bio-data page and;
  • Four written references:
    • One personal;
    • One from an Elder or senior member/Leader from Community and;
    • Two academic references OR one academic and one professional.

You will have to supply four written references:
  • One personal reference;
  • One from an Elder or senior member/Leader from Community;
  • One professional AND one academic reference OR Two academic references; These should come from an academic such as Lecturers, Tutors and Course Coordinators. Professional staff members, such as Student Success Officers, from a tertiary institution will not be accepted.

References should outline and address the below:

  • Referee’s relationships with the candidate
  • Referee’s academic and/or professional position in relation to the candidate
  • Academic ability and capabilities of the candidate
  • Personal qualities and characteristics of the candidate 
  • The candidate’s leadership potential in their field of study and/or Indigenous community
  • If applicable, the candidate’s contribution to the Indigenous community
  • Timeliness of the opportunity in the candidate’s academic and career development
