Anneke

My experiences on placement will no doubt inform how I approach my legal career and personal interactions into the future. I developed legal skills particularly in legal research, analysing anthropological reports and assisting drafting agreements and responses to Future Act Notices. It was gratifying to contribute to the work of the lawyers which directly assists Traditional Owners to exercise rights over their land. Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people have a long and deep connection with the sea that began many thousands of years ago. I learnt about this connection from meeting locals, anthropologists and lawyers at the meeting who generously shared their knowledge and stories with me. It was humbling to observe the cohesion and respect the representatives from the islands showed in working together on this claim.
