I think it is one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life and it has given me so much to reflect on. Not only has it influenced my career directions but it has been instrumental to how I view society as a human being and my role within it. Being in a professional setting with the kind of exposure to which I was privy has made me feel empowered while being aware of my limitations and structural deficiencies within our society. As a first-hand witness to the inner workings of the NLC, I can safely say that I have learnt more than I could have ever hoped, but most importantly understood how much I have yet to learn. My experience is one marked by exposure to not only various areas of law – including native title, land and sea rights, administrative law, general property law – but also introduction to a diverse range of people and communities. My legal skills were honed at the NLC building with feedback from expert lawyers in their fields. I left the NLC even more determined to make sure that I searched for meaning in whatever career I undertake. I have already made plans to return.
